This is the first of a series of posts where I'll be taking a look at scenes from mainstream films I saw as a kid that I believe contributed to my turn ons as an adult. The term Fetish Fuel was coined by the brilliant TV Tropes website but I'm using it here for want of a better alliterative term. Two of my main fetishes are larger ladies or BBWs and mature ladies. I therefore used to have avoid ITV1 back in the day as between Lorraine Kelly, Fern Britton and Coleen Nolan it would have been impossible for me to get any work done. I think the biggest influence on my admiration for the large mature female form was Hattie Jacques pictured above in tattoo form on my right man-tit. The tattoo is based on a publicity shot from Carry On Doctor. I’m a huge fan of the whole franchise but Doctor is my favourite for two reasons. Firstly it’s got all the best generic conventions of the series in place ie. Sid James as a yak yakking loveable lecher who can make a thermometer explode in his mouth by seeing an attractive nurse
Who is as you may have guessed played by Babs Windsor
who at one point causes an ambulanceman to go "phwooar!"
And later on make fruit based innuendo about her tits causing Babs to giggle delightfully and affectionately declare him to be "saucy"
There's also Jim Dale falling over and into things most notably a bath containing a soapy naked lady with a sexy mod hairstyle
The scene gains further perv points as shortly before falling through her window, Dale also manages to rip off the skirt of one of the most underrated British film beauties of all time, the dreamy Anita Harris
(Shout out to spanking fans I reckon)
Kenneth Williams of course plays a pompous nostril flaring authority figure . And last but not least Hattie Jacques plays an intimidating , haughty , repressed Matron whose dormant sexuality is brought to the surface by the aforementioned Kenneth Williams nostril flarer. With regards to Matron's initial starchy haughtiness , a scene that I always found hot is early in in the film and features Frankie Howerd as a faith healer who has bruised his arse to such an extent that he requires hospitalisation. Upon being admitted to hospital Frankie is for some reason unwilling to let Anita Harris take his pants off. Therefore Anita calls Matron and her equally starchy sidekick the Sister to take matters into hand
The following screenshot is something that intimidates and annoys Mr Howerd but I'm imagining many submissive types would consider it an utterly exquisite view
Of course if anyone is going to be able to relieve a difficult man of his pants it's Matron and she duly removes Frankies. It's a hot scene if you ask me. Plump domineering Matron , equally dominant sidekick and doe eyed younger nurse observing. I genuinely envy Frankie Howerd and I'm sure I'm not alone.
It's also well worth showing the properly ace pin up girl boxer shorts that he was so cagey about having removed to begin with
Anyway all this haughty Matron stuff brings me neatly to the second reason it’s my favourite Carry On film. The blanket bath scene.
The Matron being hot for Kenneth Williams thing was one of the series most enduring jokes and the films that used it as a subplot always had it end up with Matron turning up in Ken's tent/office whatever on heat and launch herself at him like a guided missile of curves and nightwear causing him to comically cry for help. I could never understand for the life of me why Williams' characters didn't like this. If I myself were to be confronted (as he is in the above picture) by a soft , wobbly, bosomy woman twice my size armed with booze I would be utterly delighted. The pink and black silky dressing gown and negligee combo Matron has on looks incredible and her hair when not tied back under her Matron hat is thick, curly and lusturous . Hattie Jacques was a genuinely stunning woman and I consider her one of the great sexy BBWs of moviedom. Of course Matron is interrupted before she can ravish her hapless prey and that would normally be the end of the hotness but Carry on Doctor proceeds to crank the hotness back up to eleven with a scenario that could only have been concocted by a fellow kinky chubby chaser with a penchant for F/F humiliation . The interrupters of Matrons seduction attempt are good old Sid James and his loveable band of patients (who mostly appear to have bugger all wrong with them and just want to escape from doing work or their rolling pin wielding wives). Sid's army of malingerers are seeking mob justice for the dismissal of Jim Dale due tohe bare lady in the bath thing which led to a tribunal, false testimony from Williams' Dr Tinkle and Matron and Jim being called a "ruddy sex maniac" by some Northern guy on the board of directors
The patients are aiming to extract a confession out of the dastardly authority figures by hook or by crook. Now of course Sid and Bernie would never use physical force to achieve this from a woman so he leaves Matron in the capable hands of Dilys Laye and her gang of strapping kick arse female patients in amazing vintage nightwear
The outfits they have on are divine and this brings me to another predeliction of mine that was undoubtedly caused by exposure to this film : 1960s nightwear. undoubtedly because of this film. You can blame Dilys Laye in full for this as playing a 60s female hospital patient she naturally wears it throughout the film
Now the last two nighties there aren't particularly revelaing or obviously sexy but I find them very, very hot indeed purely by asscoation with the character and what she goes on to do in the film. The women, like Sid's crew, despite being hospitalised don't appear to be particularly unwell and have previously waylaid and tied up Matron's deputy battleaxe the ward sister as shown here:
(note the rcharacter defining support type underwear of the uptight sister)
(Shout out to bondage enthusiasts)
They are also easily able to overpower Matron
whom they then proceed to hold down on an empty bed in a double wristlock and inform her they are going to subject her to "one of the most diabloical hospital tortures ever invented....a blanket bath".
Bowls of "lukewarm water" and "lovely rough flannels" are then brought in as Matron begs for mercy.
This would obviously be a difficult method of torture to apply to a clothed person so Matron's captors then proceed to pull her silky dressing gown off revealing Hattie's epic bust straining against her negligee (this movie is something of a bonanza for fans of vintage lingerie).
The scene cuts away for a bit to Dr Tinkle being menaced by Sid and the boys but soon returns to the ladies and Matron who now appears to be stark naked under a blanket.
The suggestion of nudity is very often sexier than outright nudity. You can only see Matron's shoulders and head but she's clearly naked. The other factor that makes this such a smoking hot scene is this. There's nothing sexier than a pompous haughty type being made to lose control. As you can see in the above pic Matron is still trying to maintain a stiff upper lip even as Dilys Laye is about to attack her with the flannel. She's not going to allow this unruly gang to break her facade....
But of course that's exactly what happens and soon Matron is howling away gloriously as the flannel goes... well that's kind of ambiguous with the blanket and everything but it doesn't half look like Dilys Laye is putting it round some rather intimate areas.
How smoking hot is that my friends? For a scene in a mainstream comedy film usually shown on telly in the afternoon this scene is jam packed with all kinds of kink appeal and was definitely one of the first things I remember seeing that I found erotic. It was a combination of Matron being naked and also wanting to be grabbed hold of by the women myself and subjected to smilar treatment that captured my imagination. Other factors also crossed my young mind. Why did Dilys Laye chhose this particular treatment for Matron. Could it be revenge for being on the recieving end of similar reluctant strippings and bathings inflicted on her by Matron? What woudl it have been like the other way round or if it was doe eyed lovely Anita Harris on the recieving end of a blanket bath such as this ? The young impressionable mind genuinely boggled.
The real tragedy of Carry On Doctor is that while this is going on Sid James' character is busy threatening Dr Tinkle with some impromptu untrained penis surgery (that scene could for all I know be someone else's fetish fuel. They threaten him with an enema too which I understand is a lot of people's sort of caper). You can imagine a deleted scene where Dilys and her gang tell Sid what they've done causing him to repeatedly kick himself up the arse for missing it.
I should add in conclusion that I was rather diappointed that the recent Hattie bipoic with Ruth Jones didn't feature a recreation of this scene.
Hey Wil,
ReplyDeletea really interesting read so far, I can tell you have a passion for what you write about, keep up the good work, I look forward to the next installment.

Yes, the blanket-bath scene made a deep impression on me too as a child. Revenge is a rare element in Carry On films, and there is an odd unexplained sadism about this one.
ReplyDeletePerhaps an entire subplot was edited out, but it was then realised that its climax had to be left in or the film would be too tame.
What a great article!
ReplyDeleteMy ex-girlfriend has a striking similarity to Hattie, although my ex was younger, less sexually charged, and more prone to lingerie!
She moved to Kent and,on her first visit to the pub, guess who she gets talking with? Hattie's son!
He was a real card, with a lot of stories - all of them clean, mind you!
Oh, and guess who was her new neighbour, but one? Hattie's son!
I wanted to meet him, just to hear some Hattie stories but, despite the close-proximity, we never ran into him, again.
